Layer light for depth
Don't light everything evenly. Combine a few uplights on trees or a focal wall with gentle downlights over a table and low paths lights, so the garden reads in soft pools and shadows rather than a flat wash.

Lighting does more than keep the path visible — it sets the whole mood of an evening in the garden, highlights your best planting and draws the eye out from the house. A few well-placed lights transform a space you'd otherwise disappear into after sunset.

Warm-white LEDs flatter foliage and skin far better than cool white, and they're cheap to run and long-lived. Choose low-voltage or solar fittings that are safe outdoors and easy to reposition as your planting grows.
An uplight under a striking tree, a wash across a textured wall, or a spotlight on a favourite planter creates instant focal points. Angle lights to graze foliage or brick at close range for lovely textural shadows.
Keep paths, steps and the barbecue area well lit for safety, with lights at both the top and bottom of any steps. Timers or dusk-to-dawn sensors mean the lights look after themselves and the garden is never left in the dark.
