Growing vegetables in containers

No veg patch? No problem. Many crops grow brilliantly in pots, tubs and grow bags.

A container garden can be surprisingly productive — even on a balcony, patio or beside a back door. With the right crops and care, pots and grow bags will feed you through summer.

1

Match the crop to the pot

Salad leaves, radishes, herbs, beans, chillies and tomatoes all thrive in containers. Use a generous pot size for hungry crops like tomatoes and courgettes, and remember bigger pots dry out more slowly and need less watering.

2

Good drainage and good soil first

Containers need drainage holes and a quality potting compost — garden soil is too heavy and can compact in a pot. A slow-release feed mixed in at planting gives crops a strong start.

3

Water is the constant challenge

Container veg dries out quickly, especially in summer. Check daily, water thoroughly and use water-retaining compost or a saucer to reduce how often. Feed regularly too, since the confined soil runs out of nutrients fast.

4

Group them for sun and caretaking

Group sun-loving crops in the brightest spot and cluster pots together so they're easier to water and keep an eye on. Raised off the ground, containers also avoid many ground-level pests.
