Inviting birds into your garden

A garden full of birds is a healthy, lively one. Here's how to feed, shelter and water them so they keep coming back.

Birds are a joy to watch and good signs of a thriving garden — they also help you out by eating aphids and caterpillars. A little food, water, and somewhere to shelter is all it takes to make your garden theirs.

1

Feed year-round with the right mix

Offer a range of food — fat balls and peanuts in winter, seeds and live mealworms all year — in feeders that are safe and easy to clean. Keep feeding going through early spring too, when natural food is scarce and birds need the help most.

2

Provide fresh water every day

A shallow bird bath or dish of clean water is irresistible, especially in hot or freezing weather. Keep it topped up and clean it regularly, and even a small pond gives birds a reliable place to drink and bathe.

3

Plant for shelter and natural food

Dense shrubs, hedges and climbers give birds safe places to nest, roost and dart into when a cat or hawk is about. Berries and seed-bearing plants provide natural food, so a well-planted garden looks after birds all year, not just at the feeder.

4

Keep feeders clean and safe

Wash feeders and baths regularly to stop disease spreading, and position them where birds have a clear view of approaching predators. Simple steps like these keep your garden a healthy, welcoming stop for the birds.
