Laying a new lawn: turf or seed?

Both get you a great lawn — but they suit different budgets, timescales and DIY levels. Here's how to choose.

If you're starting a lawn from scratch, the first decision is whether to lay turf or sow seed. It's not a question of which is better in the abstract — it's about your budget, how quickly you need the lawn and how much work you want.

1

Turf: instant and reliable

Turf gives you a lawn the day it's laid — no waiting weeks for germination, and it instantly suppresses weeds. It's the clear choice if you want a usable garden quickly, or are less confident about getting seed to establish.

2

Seed: cheaper and more flexible

Sowing seed costs a fraction of turfing and lets you choose a grass mix tailored to your garden — fine and hard-wearing for lawns, or shade-tolerant for tricky spots. The trade-off is patience: expect several weeks, and care to keep new seedlings watered.

3

Whatever you choose, prep decides the result

Both turf and seed need a well-prepared base to thrive — cleared, levelled and improved soil, worked to a fine, firm tilth. Skimp on the ground preparation and neither will look its best for long.

4

Match it to your plans

If you need the lawn down in a weekend or have children ready to play on it, turf is hard to beat. If you're on a budget or want a specific grass mix, seed is the smarter route. Both give excellent results when the ground is well prepared.
