Raised bed vegetable gardening

Raised beds make growing veg easier, tidier and more productive. Here's why they work and how to get started.

Raised beds are one of the simplest ways to grow veg well — whether you have poor soil, limited space, or simply want a tidier, easier-to-manage plot. Done properly, they're remarkably productive.

1

Why they make growing easier

Raised beds give you a deep, well-drained, weed-suppressing planting area full of good soil you control. Because you never walk on it, the soil stays loose and fertile, and it warms up faster in spring — meaning earlier crops.

2

They're great for poor or limited ground

If your soil is stony, compacted or poor, a raised bed lets you start fresh with quality compost and topsoil. On hard or paved ground, they turn an unusable space into a productive growing area.

3

Easier on your back, and higher yields

Working at raised-bed height is far kinder to your back, and because you plant more densely in a contained bed, you get more from a smaller area. Fewer pests and weeds to fight, too.

4

Keep the soil fed and happy

The soil needs upkeep — top up with compost each year and avoid letting beds dry out in summer. Group crops sensibly, rotate them each season, and a modest set of beds will feed you generously.
