Repairing and painting fences and woodwork in winter

Winter rain is the real test for timber. Here's how to fix, treat and prepare your fences and woodwork.

Fences, gates, trellis and decking take the worst of winter weather. While plant life sleeps, it's the perfect time to sort out the timber that frames your garden — fixing before it rots and treating before spring arrives.

1

Inspect the timber for damage

Work round your fences and woodwork looking for rot, loose panels, wobbly posts and protruding nails. Catch damage now, before wind and rain makes it worse, and it's a simple repair rather than a full replacement.

2

Fix what needs fixing

Tighten loose screws, re-fix sagging panels, replace any rotted boards and re-secure posts that wobble. New treated timber or concrete around a post can sort most issues and stop small problems becoming big ones.

3

Treat and protect the timber

Repaint and re-coat dry woodwork in good weather, along the grain, with a quality exterior wood treatment that soaks in. Give bare or weathered timber a clean and a preservative coat so it sheds water instead of absorbing it.

4

Prepare the rest of the structure

Clear the base of fences and gates of soil, debris and mulch that trap moisture against the timber. Brush off moss and algae, and leave treated woodwork to dry and cure before weather or climbing plants come back.
