Tidy up from winter
Clear fallen leaves, broken branches and debris that has built up over the colder months. Cut back any frost-damaged growth and give borders a good rake so new shoots have room to come through.
Give your garden a head start with a few key jobs in early spring — the results last all summer.

Get the important jobs done early in spring and the whole season runs more smoothly. A focused burst of work now pays off for months — here's the priority order that works for most Surrey and London gardens.

Fork in some compost or a slow-release feed to the beds and top up mulches. Healthy soil holds water better through summer and needs less fussing over once things warm up.
Once the ground has begun to dry a little, rake out moss and thatch, and give the grass its first feed of the year. If the lawn is heavily compacted, now is a fine time to aerate it.
Late winter and early spring is the window for pruning many shrubs and fruit trees, while they are still dormant. Do it now and the plant puts its energy into fresh, healthy growth rather than repairing an old cut.
From garden maintenance to a full maintenance-style overhaul, the JFL Gardens team works across Surrey and London.
