Lawn feeding is far simpler than the product aisle makes it look. In the UK, a handful of well-timed feeds across the year does more for a lawn than feeding sparingly — here's the straightforward schedule that works.
As the lawn starts to grow, usually from around March to May, give it a balanced spring feed. This strong start helps it thicken, green up and crowd out moss and weeds before they get a hold.
In summer, use a feed suited to the season — or feed lighter and less often, watering in well. A lawn fed in spring but left to cope through the heat will still perform well, and a little summer feeding keeps it lush.
A low-nitrogen, winter-focused feed in autumn builds strong roots and helps the lawn store energy to come back well in spring. It's one of the most valuable feeds of the year for long-term health.
Always follow the product's rates — overfeeding burns the grass. Water the feed in unless it's about to rain, and mow slightly higher in summer so the grass holds moisture and stays healthy.
