Growing herbs in a small garden

Basil, mint, rosemary and more can flourish in a tiny space. Here's how to grow a useful herb garden anywhere.

You don't need a dedicated veg plot to grow herbs — a handful of pots, a windowsill border or a single sunny bed is plenty. And home-grown herbs taste far better than anything from a supermarket packet.

1

Choose the herbs you'll actually use

Start with the ones that earn their place in your cooking — basil, mint, rosemary, thyme, parsley and chives all earn their space. Pick a small collection you'll use often rather than a big collection you'll forget.

2

Most herbs want sun and good drainage

Mediterranean herbs like rosemary, thyme and sage love a sunny, free-draining spot and don't want to sit in wet soil. Mint and parsley are more forgiving and will cope with a little shade and moister ground.

3

Containers make herbs easy

Pots are brilliant for herbs — you can move sun-lovers to a sunny spot, keep invasive mint safely contained, and have everything near the kitchen door. Just use a free-draining compost and water regularly, as pots dry out quickly.

4

Snip, don't strip

Pick herbs little and often, cutting above a leaf joint rather than stripping the plant bare. Regular light harvesting keeps herbs bushy, productive and ready when you need them.
