Preparing your patio for jet washing

A little prep makes the difference between a great clean and a mess. Here's what to do – and move – before you start.

Jet washing looks like a 'switch on and go' job, but a few minutes of preparation protects your patio, your plants and your clothes – and gets you a far better finish once the water starts flowing.

1

Clear the area completely

Move furniture, pots, BBQ and anything else off the patio so you have a clear run. Sweep away loose debris, leaves and dirt first – the jet is for lifting grime, not for chasing leaves around.

2

Protect your plants and lawn

Shear off or cover nearby plants that might get splashed, and water beds slightly beforehand so any bleach or chemical you use doesn't fizzle into dry soil. Tuck the jet lance's beam away from delicate borders and the lawn edges you want to keep crisp.

3

Patch and check first

Fill any cracks, weeds or loose joints with fresh sand before you blast – high-pressure water will happily scour out a weak joint and wash away loose pointing. Check for any loose or cracked slabs and repair them before the pressure finds them.

4

Pick the right setting

Different surfaces want different pressure – a hard, well-laid paved terrace takes more than soft or aged paving, delicate brick or a tiled step. Start gentle, test a small corner, and only increase if the paving shrugs it off.
