Why seal at all?
A good patio sealant soaks into the pores of the stone and forms a barrier that resists water, dirt and the spores that grow into moss and algae. It also makes the surface easier to clean in future – grime lifts without the jet.
A freshly cleaned patio is the perfect time to seal it – locking in the clean and holding off weeds and moss for far longer.

Jet washing lifts years of grime – but if you walk away without sealing, moss, algae and weeds start recolonising almost immediately. A single afternoon of sealing makes the clean last far, far longer.

After jet washing, the paving needs to be thoroughly dry before any sealant goes on – usually a full dry day or two. Sealing into damp stone traps moisture and the sealant fails. Pick a clear, dry spell and don't skip the wait.
Sealers range from natural, matt, water-based finishes to glossy wet-look sealers and coloured options. Match the finish to your patio – most people want the stone's natural look with a subtle sheen rather than a shiny plastic effect. Read the coverage rates and buy a little more than you think you need.
Work in small sections with a roller or brush, keeping a wet edge so there are no lap marks, and resist walking on it until it cures. Re-seal every couple of years (sooner in heavy shade or footfall), and you'll clean far less often in between.
